With the lighter nights and warmer days of spring, we turn our attention to the outdoor activities at the Sports Centre in the next two Sports Scene ‘Spotlights’. This month on Petanque and some new Tennis coaching news. Other New first:
Football Shelters - We have been successful in our grant application to Southwest Wiltshire Area Board and have received nearly £700 to refurbish what were rather sorry looking football team shelters. This work is now well underway with the broken and missing plastic replaced with robust metal sheeting.
Chalke Valley Fete and Produce Show – Planning is now in full swing with the Fete Committee that will be hosted by the Sports Centre on the afternoon of Saturday 19 August.
Event Venue – If you have a children’s birthday party or a family celebration that you are planning, then the hall and outdoor space at the Centre are great venues. Good parking, a small kitchenette and easy access. Contact one of the Committee to discuss.
SPOTLIGHT ON THE CHALKE VALLEY PETANQUE CLUB
This will be the Club’s third outdoor season when play resumes on 12th May on Friday evenings from 6.30pm-8.00pm. It’s a great way to start the weekend. Very social, good fun and occasionally competitive! If you haven’t tried the sport then please just turn up, all equipment is provided, and you would be made most welcomed.
Most people come for a recreational game on Friday evenings, but the Club also enter competitions and will be joining the local league again this year which takes place at pubs and clubs within a half an hour radius of Broad Chalke. Whilst competitive, these are also very friendly events and a nice opportunity to visit other clubs if you want to get a bit more involved in the sport.
We operate a Sports Bar with a small range of wines, beers, soft drinks and snacks. We have three ‘Rinks’ on the Petanque Terrain and usually play in teams of 3, so 18 players on the Terrain whist everyone else enjoys a glass and a chat whilst watching from the picnic tables.
There is no special skill required (though some may say different), no special footwear- although flat shoes much easier, and its great from any age. Currently we have from aged 10 to aged 92 and everything in between. It’s a great way to meet old friends and make new ones and often at the end of the evening people migrate to the Queens Head!
There is a £2 evening charge.
Should you wish to try the sport please free to join us at Chalke Valley Sports Centre, Knighton Rd, Salisbury SP55HX Fridays from 12 May at 6:30pm or contact Damon Johns at chalkevalleypetanque@gmail.com or 01722780915 for more information.
